Abstract
The environmental debate around carbon has witnessed a dramatic turn
from cynicism to proactive involvement. The accumulation of greenhouse
gases (GHG) in the atmosphere is one of the most pressing environmental
issues of the day. The challenge is to address near- and long-term
concerns in mitigating GHG or carbon emission while continuing to
provide affordable energy to meet the growing needs of the world.

The petroleum industry has the responsibility to deliver energy to the
world while implementing technological innovations to reduce emissions.
The greater challenge in carbon mitigation, however, requires a broader
partnership between various stakeholders: the energy industry,
organizations involved in mitigation, regulatory agencies and other
forces that deploy technological and policy innovations. Changes in
technological and policy innovations are creating new opportunities for
new markets, new products, first-mover advantage, and strategic
maneuvering.

Such strategies and proactive approaches to climate change allow
businesses to translate the threat of climate change into opportunities
and competitive advantage through the development of preventive and
adaptive solutions. This lecture will highlight examples that support
innovation and entrepreneurship as powerful forces for positive
environmental change.
