Potential for Renewable Energy in Cambridge

MIT & Cambridge Seminar

"Energy& Climate in Cambridge"

Seminar 4: Local Renewable Energy

On February 2, 2006, a group of MIT students and their instructors will
report the results of a continuing experiment in collaborative education.
The Laboratory for Energy and the Environment (LFEE) and the Department of
Urban Studies and Planning have joined forces with the City of Cambridge to
mobilize MIT student energy and creativity for one of the city's most
prominent environmental goals: climate protection.

In 2002, the City Council adopted a plan to reduce in-city emissions of
greenhouse gases (notably, carbon dioxide resulting from fossil fuel
combustion) by 20% by 2010, in comparison to 1990 levels. Over the past
three years, MIT students have used MIT's Independent Activities Period
(IAP) in January to develop innovative strategies to help reduce greenhouse
gas emissions in Cambridge.

This year, we have researched local renewable energy use in the City.
Students learned about solar, wind, and biodiesel energy applications, and
chose to research biodiesel and wind projects that can be piloted at MIT,
and applied throughout the City if successful. Promoting cleaner and
greener electricity is one of the major priorities of the City's Climate
Protection Plan.

The month-long seminar begins with a one-week crash course in the relevant
issues. Experts in renewable technologies, local governance, and Cambridge
environmental management visit the class and consult with students on their
work. Students then have two weeks to research renewable energy topics, and
prepare to report on their results.

Student proposals will be presented at 1:30 pm on February 2, in Building
56, Room 114, at MIT (map

can attend to hear our students' findings, offer feedback to them, and
discuss the implications of potential renewable energy projects for
Cambridge's climate impact.

Please join us and lend your insights to this experiment in
community-focused environmental education. RSVP's (to bconlin at mit.edu, or
617-452-3199) are appreciated, but not necessary. See you on February 2!
