"Times New Roman"'>, a group of MIT students and their instructors will report
the results of a continuing experiment in collaborative education. The
Laboratory for Energy and the Environment (LFEE) and the Department of Urban
Studies and Planning have joined forces with the City of Cambridge to mobilize
MIT student energy and creativity for one of the city</span></font><font
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman"'>'</span></font><font
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman"'>s most
prominent environmental goals: climate protection. </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=3
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'> </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=3
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'>In
2002, the City Council adopted a plan to reduce in-city emissions of greenhouse
gases (notably, carbon dioxide resulting from fossil fuel combustion) by 20% by
2010, in comparison to 1990 levels. Over the past three years, MIT
students have used MIT’s Independent Activities Period (IAP) in January
to develop innovative strategies to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in </span></font><font
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman"'>Cambridge</span></font><font
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman"'>. </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=3
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'> </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=3

year, we have researched local renewable energy use in the City. Students
learned about solar, wind, and biodiesel energy applications, and chose to
research biodiesel and wind projects that can be piloted at MIT, and applied
throughout the City if successful. Promoting cleaner and greener
electricity is one of the major priorities of the City’s Climate
Protection Plan.</span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=3
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman"'> </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=3

month-long seminar begins with a one-week crash course in the relevant
issues. Experts in renewable technologies, local governance, and </span></font><font
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman"'>Cambridge</span></font><font
face="Times New Roman"><span style='font-family:"Times New Roman"'>
environmental management visit the class and consult with students on their
work. Students then have two weeks to research renewable energy topics,
and prepare to report on their results. </span></font></p>
