MIT EDITORS' CLUB
*Meeting Notes from May 13, 2013*
*Communications Apps*
We started off this meeting by bandying about some of our favorite communications apps for iPhone and Android. Several of these are free. Here's the resulting list, in no particular order:
--the Merriam-Webster dictionary<http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary-apps/android-ipad-iphone-windows.htm>
--EverNote <https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/evernote/id281796108?mt=8> (for note-taking and a lot more). Per Robyn Fizz of Information Systems and Technology, there's a good course on how to use EverNote available free through MIT's subscription to Lynda.com<http://ist.mit.edu/training-web>.
--Skitch<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skitch-snap.-mark-up.-send./id490505997?mt=8> (I didn't quite follow what this one does, but according to their web site: "See something that sparks an idea? Use Skitch to snap it, mark it up with simple tools, and send it on in an instant." )
--iTalk<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/italk-recorder/id293673304?mt=8> (recording app)
--Dragon Dictation<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dragon-dictation/id341446764?mt=8>
--Day One <http://dayoneapp.com> (for journaling, complete with geotags and prompts to help with the actual writing)
--Snapshot Postcard <http://www.snapshotpostcard.com/solution/> (take a pic while on vacation then turn it into an actual postcard that is sent by snail mail to friends)
*MIT Videos*
This is really, really cool: many of you may remember that MIT Communication Production Services offers a Flickr library of MIT photos that we can all use for free. Now Emer Garland of CPS tells us that in a month or so they'll be adding b-roll video of MIT landmarks like the Infinite Corridor and the Student Center.
Emer will send us a note when the videos are available, but in the meantime, here is a link to the MITNews story about the photo library; it includes additional links in the sidebar to CPS and to guidelines for using the library:

*Editors' Club Author*
Congratulations to Lauren Clark, communications coordinator for the MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub, for becoming a new author! Crafty Bastards: Beer in New England from the Mayflower to Modern Day came out May 1. At this meeting she answered lots of questions about the book. For example, how did it come about? Answer: she had pitched the publisher on a related topic that wasn't picked up, then found out that they were interested in doing a book on the history of beer in New England. She wrote up a full-length proposal on that, and "off she went."
For more, go to Lauren's web site at http://www.laurenclark.me<http://www.laurenclark.me/>/
*MIT Work-Life Center*
Several folks at this meeting commented on what a great resource the MIT Work-Life Center <http://hrweb.mit.edu/worklife/welcome> is. For example, over the last few months alone the center has sponsored excellent seminars on U.S. College Admissions 101 and on aging parents.
*Thank You*
Thank you to Paul Rivenberg of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center for hosting this meeting!
*Next Meeting*
Thursday, June 19
W98-302 (Resource Development)
After our June meeting, we'll take a break for the summer, reconvening in September. I'll send out the fall schedule when it's ready.
Cheers,
Elizabeth
