SA+P NEWS: January 2014

It’s been widely noted in the media but just in case you missed it, we are sad to report that Chuck Vest, president of MIT from 1990 to 2004, died December 12 at 72.

Chuck was much loved while he was here, perhaps especially at SA+P because he engaged so boldly with our dean-at-the-time Bill Mitchell to make MIT an exemplar of distinguished architectural design.

Together they guided one of the most ambitious building programs in US higher education, a metamorphosis that increased the built environment of MIT’s campus by 25% and included five landmark buildings by Frank Gehry, Kevin Roche, Steven Holl, Charles Correa and Fumihiko Maki.

‘I believe that the buildings at this extraordinary university should be as diverse, forward-thinking and audacious as the community they serve,’ Vest said. ‘They should stand as a metaphor for the ingenuity at work inside them.’

Vest’s partnership with Mitchell was truly visionary and their absence is deeply felt here. We can only hope that at this moment they’re busy somewhere building beautiful castles together in the sky.
