MIT EDITORS' CLUB

*Meeting Notes from December 11, 2013*

Happy New Year, everyone! As I compiled these minutes, I realized that video seemed to dominate the topics discussed at our last meeting of 2013. So here we go:

*Video Interns*

Robyn Fizz of IS&T has been creating one to two videos a semester for the IS&T news site--for free! How does she do it? Interns. She's had great success with students from both Bunker Hill Community College and Wheelock College. For more information about arranging for potential video interns from either of these institutions, contact:

Professor Thomas Pastel
Video and Media Arts, Bunker Hill Community College
dpastel at bhcc.mass.edu<mailto:dpastel at bhcc.mass.edu>

and

Dan Owusu, Instructor
Wheelock College
dowusu at wheelock.edu

Here's an example of Robyn's most recent video, created by an intern from BHCC:

>From Intern to Employee: IS&T Partners with Year Up

(As an aside, if any of your departments might be able to work with a Year Up intern--the focus of this video--on an IT or finance track, Robyn suggests you contact Greg Walton at gwalton at mit.edu).

*Video Contest*

Meanwhile, Emily Ranken of Environmental Health Services notes that her office is sponsoring a video contest open to any member of the MIT community. The Lab Coat Video Contest is part of a new EHS effort to create several videos on health and safety topics for training purposes. In this case, Emily notes that EHS can provide the lab coats if needed….

First prize is $1,000; second is $500. For more, go to http://labcoats.mit.edu/contest or check out the ad at the end of these minutes.

*Video on the Web*

To learn more about how to plan, make, and share videos on the web, you might want to attend the next workshop sponsored by MIT Communication Production Services. For more on the free January 22 event, and to register, go to http://commtoolkit.mit.edu/video-on-the-web.

*The MIT Social Media Working Group*

This has nothing to do with video, but I wanted to give a shout-out to the SMWG, a group for individuals who manage at least one social media account for their departments. It is led by Stephanie Hatch Leishman. If you or a colleague would like to join that group, email Stephanie at <hatch_s at MIT.EDU>.

*Thank You*

Many thanks to Camilla Brinkman of the Edgerton Center and Nancy Adams of D-Lab for hosting this meeting.
