[Editors] Invitation to MIT's Relay For Life, March 10, 2012

Good Morning,

I write to you today as a member of the Editors Club and as the Media Relations Assistant in the News Office. One of the projects that I'm working with a group of students to promote is the Relay for Life on campus this March. The students have asked me to help them let more staff and faculty know about the event this year. So I wanted to send you the note that they wrote (below). Cancer never sleeps, so why should we?

For the second year running, MIT Colleges Against Cancer will host Relay For Life, the annual fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society.  Join the entire MIT community - including students, staff, faculty, friends, and family - at Johnson Athletic Center W26 on March 10-11, 2012 for a fun-filled, family-friendly overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer.  During the event, we celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.  Family-friendly activities will take place from 6:30-8:30pm.  Last year, in our first year of organizing the event, we had over 600 participants and raised over $40,000 to support cancer research, advocacy, and patient care.

Cancer survivors play an important role at Relay.  After a special dinner for survivors and their caregivers at 6pm, survivors kick off the entire event by walking the opening celebratory lap, and they are honored later in the night by the lighting of Luminarias. These Luminarias shine to represent the hope for a future where cancer no longer threatens the lives of our family and friends. Please help us honor cancer survivors by inviting them to join us at Relay.
