Dear Editors:
I would like to invite you to attend the third seminar in the
Perspectives on Critical Infrastructure Systems series presented by
Ralph R. Peterson, Chairman and CEO, CH2M HILL Companies, Ltd.
Title of Seminar: Critical Infrastructure Challenges: Impacts of
Global and Cross-
Sector Trends and Driving Forces
Date: March 15, 2006
Place: MIT, Building E40-496, One Amherst Street,
Cambridge, MA
Time: 4:00 - 5:00, Reception at 3:30
Co-Sponsored by: MIT's Center for Technology, Policy, and Industrial
Development
(CTPID) and Engineering Systems Division (ESD).
Abstract: The resiliency and/or vulnerability of critical
infrastructure is receiving a great deal of attention, with much of
that attention focused at a national level and directed to specific
infrastructure components such as power, information technology,
telecommunications, water, transportation or health care.
There are, however, some important global and cross-sector trends and
driving forces which are shaping the context and key dimensions of
this critical infrastructure resiliency/vulnerability debate. These
global/cross-sector trends include: globalization of economic
activity including especially just-in-time global supply chains;
industry consolidation; population/demographic trends including
demand growth, urbanization and population diversification; and
natural resource limitations including both resource material supply
and environmental aspects.
In this seminar, we will explore these global and cross-sector trends
and issues, and seek to illuminate the potential for these global
and/or cross-sector "interconnections" to amplify critical
infrastructure vulnerabilities.
