Date

Time:

Co-Sponsored by: MIT’s Center for Technology, Policy, and
Industrial Development
(CTPID) and Engineering Systems Division (ESD).

Abstract: The resiliency and/or vulnerability of critical
infrastructure is receiving a great deal of attention, with much of that
attention focused at a national level and directed to specific
infrastructure components such as power, information technology,
telecommunications, water, transportation or health care.

There are, however, some important global and cross-sector trends and
driving forces which are shaping the context and key dimensions of this
critical infrastructure resiliency/vulnerability debate. These
global/cross-sector trends include: globalization of economic
activity including especially just-in-time global supply chains; industry
consolidation; population/demographic trends including demand growth,
urbanization and population diversification; and natural resource
limitations including both resource material supply and environmental
aspects.

In this seminar, we will explore these global and cross-sector trends and
issues, and seek to illuminate the potential for these global and/or
cross-sector “interconnections” to amplify critical infrastructure
vulnerabilities.
