[Editors] Google alerts - Translations

One thing that can help with translations is having absolutely impeccable
HTML code (preferably XHTML) and applying the language attribute in the
appropriate tags. If you have a quote or term embedded within the document
that is in another language, you can code that text span for the language
and the direction.

Another issue is buttons and graphics used in lieu of text -- makings sure
to use the alt tag for meaningful images. And make space for text large
enough to accommodate languages that overall use more space.

The World Wide Web Consortium (http://www.w3.org/) offers guidelines for
this.

Bon chance!

  Hello folks,

I am looking into using Google's translation tool for our websites. I know
the accuracy limitations of machine translations, but I wonder if there are
any other concerns?

  Thanks,

    Hi all,

Google has a new service some of you might find handy called Google
alerts.
    <http://www.google.com/alerts?hl=en>

Google will search News and the Web for you on a weekly, daily, or "as
it
happens" basis, and send you email when your keywords, e.g. "MIT" or
    "underwater basket weaving" turn up.

I signed up for it last night, and have already gotten 4 alerts with a
total of
16 News mentions of MIT, so you might want to make your search terms
quite
    specific to avoid being inundated.

    Enjoy!

    Susan
