[Editors] Story behind MIT building numbers?

The only quasi-logical explanation that I've heard pertains to the main
campus: If you split the campus in two pieces going north-south at
building 10, then the buildings to the west are odd numbered and the
buildings towards the east are even numbered. The Alumni Pool does not fit
into this because it is #57 and it is on the east side.
