[Editors] Story behind MIT building numbers?

Hello editors,

Does anyone out there know if there is a logical explanation for the 
MIT building numbering system? Someone once told me that it had 
something to do with the wife of one of the early MIT presidents being 
into numerology, but this must be an urban legend, right?  I thought 
one of you might know the real scoop (if there is one).

We are giving a tour of new MIT classrooms to people coming in from 
outside campus for an NLII workshop and I thought this might be an 
interesting piece of trivia to include.
