Hi Ou,

I am having the same problem as Christopher, but with release 3: I downloaded files <https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files> / Version4 <https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4> / Release3 <https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3> / input_init <https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3/input_init> /xx_diffkr.0000000059.data <https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release3/input_init/xx_diffkr.0000000059.data>, and the range of values is [-0.6 0.4]: too large to be vertical diffusivities (negative?). Can you please point me to the diffusivity files for release3?

Many thanks,
Paola

You can get V4r4’s dimensional vertical diffusivity field (first guess plus the control adjustment) from PO.DAAC at https://archive.podaac.earthdata.nasa.gov/podaac-ops-cumulus-protected/ECCO_L4_OCEAN_3D_MIX_COEFFS_LLC0090GRID_V4R4/OCEAN_3D_MIXING_COEFFS_ECCO_V4r4_native_llc0090.nc <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__urldefense.us_v3_-5F-5Fhttps-3A_archive.podaac.earthdata.nasa.gov_podaac-2Dops-2Dcumulus-2Dprotected_ECCO-5FL4-5FOCEAN-5F3D-5FMIX-5FCOEFFS-5FLLC0090GRID-5FV4R4_OCEAN-5F3D-5FMIXING-5FCOEFFS-5FECCO-5FV4r4-5Fnative-5Fllc0090.nc-5F-5F-3B-21-21PvBDto6Hs4WbVuu7-21bO3-2DZfkkeOEujVIhL2nn3AEb9q1Zl86CHb1ZTrYDdah4HPKuSZ-5FF2v6ZPAv3JA9Giy4-24&d=DwMGaQ&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=YvEcUc3iPS8v6LXnkXPI-w&m=6Ilpubv4qn3OD41-8yhyk6uu5j1XJQRLMfnf7OSEpRQ&s=FPXRnuyQe_XQBb92q8_lgGGF7xNgSrdEC2S7NliIZnw&e=>. The variable is called “DIFFKR” in the NetCDF file. Alternatively, you can calculate it by summing up total_diffkr_r009bit11.bin and xx_diffkr.dim.0000000129.data that are available on ECCO Drive at https://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release4/input_init/total_diffkr_r009bit11.bin <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ecco.jpl.nasa.gov_drive_files_Version4_Release4_input-5Finit_total-5Fdiffkr-5Fr009bit11.bin&d=DwQGaQ&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=YvEcUc3iPS8v6LXnkXPI-w&m=6Ilpubv4qn3OD41-8yhyk6uu5j1XJQRLMfnf7OSEpRQ&s=At_qtxweGPSK3iWrt0MTdwFZh-Qh5o8DZk6kxGJy3qc&e=> andhttps://ecco.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files/Version4/Release4/other/adjustments/xx_diffkr.dim.0000000129.data <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ecco.jpl.nasa.gov_drive_files_Version4_Release4_other_adjustments_xx-5Fdiffkr.dim.0000000129.data&d=DwMGaQ&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=YvEcUc3iPS8v6LXnkXPI-w&m=6Ilpubv4qn3OD41-8yhyk6uu5j1XJQRLMfnf7OSEpRQ&s=PoZK-6xokNwmLvGaaEYxY1OlakgA_2PpUzEKmntKQwA&e=>.

However, the values in this file are order 1, so adding it to total_diffkr_r009bit11 would produce diffusivities far outside the expected range.

Using this produces adjustments on the order of 1e-6 to 1e-5, which seems about right. However, the data.ctrl namelist also specifies WC01 smoothing and some thresholding. Do these need to be applied as well?
