[Dspace-general] DSpace/Manakin Customization Tutorial @ JCDL

Hello all,

I wanted to put out an early announcement for the second "Making DSpace 
Your Own" tutorial at JCDL 2007 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 
(http://www.jcdl2007.org/).  This tutorial will cover 
basic-to-intermediate customizations of DSpace, while also including an 
introduction of Manakin (http://wiki.dspace.org/Manakin) and using 
Manakin's Aspects and Themes to customize it for your institution.

Registration is not yet open for JCDL 2007, but the cost of the 
conference and tutorials is already posted on the JCDL registration page:

Please be aware that "Making DSpace Your Own" is the ONLY tutorial being 
held on Monday, June 18. All other tutorials are scheduled for Tuesday, 
June 19.

Tutorial 1: Making DSpace Your Own
Monday, June 18, 9:00am - 12:30pm

Starting an institutional or digital repository using DSpace software? 
Get control over its look and feel! Learn to modify and customize DSpace 
to reflect your institution's branding, and improve usability for both 
submitters and users. Learn about Manakin, the upcoming XML/XSLT-based 
interface for DSpace. Specifically we will be discussing how to use 
Manakin's Aspects and Themes to customize the interface for your 
institution. Finally, learn more about the DSpace developer community 
and how you can give back.

Target Audience:
Librarians and staff planning or running DSpace installations who want 
more control over the technology.

Level of experience required:
Introductory to intermediate-level. This tutorial assumes little or no 
knowledge of DSpace or Java. Familiarity with basic Unix commands, FTP, 
HTML, and XML highly recommended, though not required.

Presenters:
Tim Donohue is the Research Programmer for IDEALS (www.ideals.uiuc.edu), 
the institutional repository for the University of Illinois at 
Urbana-Champaign. He is a DSpace Committer, helping to provide patches, 
bug fixes and general software management to the DSpace community. Along 
with Dorothea Salo (Wisconsin), Tim taught the first "Making DSpace Your 
Own" tutorial at JCDL 2006.

Scott Phillips is the Research Coordinator for the Texas Digital Library 
(www.tdl.org) and a developer at Texas A&M University Libraries. He is a 
DSpace Committer and the lead developer on the Manakin interface project.
