Stephen,
The only metadata you can add to the contents file is the name of the bundle the bitstream is to be stored in (do an export of an item/collection and you'll see these)
Also, If you need to fully describe the independent bitstreams, you might want to consider storing each bitstream as a separate item. For example you could make a book the collection with each item comprising a chapter. Of course, that then limits the metadata you can add for the book, since it's limited to what's available at the collection level...

Hi.
Regarding the content file used by item import, is this simply and only
a list of file names to be ingested for the item? Or can it include the
file description as well?
What I have in mind is something like:
chap1.pdf Chapter One
chap2.pdf Chapter Two
etc. (Ideally with slightly more interesting descriptions!)
