Hello dorm residents!

We are happy to announce that, funded and organized by individual dorm governments, DormCon, and the UA, beginning September 1st, 2026 and ending May 31st, 2027, laundry machines in all undergraduate residence halls will be free-to-use. This means that all machines can be used as often as needed, and you will no longer need to use the CSC GO app to begin a cycle.

DormCon began working with Housing and Residential Services (HRS) to initiate these pilots after hearing from residents how temporary free-to-use laundry at various different instances has been beneficial to dorms and their communities.

We then began an ongoing laundry pilot in Simmons and Baker, where all washers and dryers in those dorms are free-to-use. Organized by DormCon and funded by individual dorm governments, these pilots sought to understand how water usage, energy consumption, and maintenance costs change when laundry machines can be freely used over an academic year.

Over the course of this academic year, the data we’ve gathered from Simmons and Baker has been extremely promising so far. Thus, based on existing feedback and current pilot data, we have worked to expand this pilot campus-wide in the upcoming academic year. We’ll continue working with HRS to monitor program impacts and explore implementing free-to-use laundry permanently.

Your dorm presidents, DormCon Exec, and the UA Officers have worked with HRS over the course of the academic year to make this possible. If you have any thoughts, comments, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to dormcon-laundry at mit.edu<mailto:dormcon-laundry at mit.edu>. Thanks everyone!

Best,
