Biology IAP Workshop 2024
Cultivating everyday mindfulness: discovering your path to a fulfilling life and career
To members of the MIT Biology community (undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, visiting scientists, staff, and faculty):
Do you ever feel stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed? Are you unable to focus or sustain attention? Do you struggle to navigate your emotions and respond to difficult situations?
Life presents us with many challenges. As scientists, we rely on our “thinking minds” to achieve success in our jobs, but being able to actively manage stress, communicate more effectively, and build resilience in the face of obstacles will also contribute to our professional success and, more importantly, our overall well-being.
In this workshop, we will discuss why and how practicing mindfulness can help you develop empathy, self-awareness, and emotional regulation. Over time, cultivating these practices can empower us to set a personal path for a rewarding life and career. We will introduce several mindfulness concepts, lead a short group meditation, and ask participants to engage in a journaling exercise and paired listening activity.
This workshop takes inspiration from the “Search Inside Yourself<https://atlas.mit.edu/learning/learner#/course-catalog/BSK10071c>” (SIY) program, which takes an evidence-based approach combining attention-training and emotional intelligence skills rooted in neuroscience. It is designed to develop social and emotional intelligence skills for individuals and teams, aiming to improve engagement and well-being at school and at work.
