Dear faculty, students, and staff,
I’m writing to let you know you that Eric Lander, a member of the biology faculty, is returning this month to MIT in accordance with the terms of his academic leave.
As you know, prior to his leave, Eric was Director of The Broad Institute, which was the major focus of his activities. Earlier today, Director Todd Golub wrote to the Broad community to announce that Eric will return to the Broad as a Core Institute Member and Founding Director Emeritus. You may already be aware that Eric also recently assumed the role of Chief Scientist at Science for America<https://www.scienceforamerica.org/>, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting science as a tool for addressing pressing issues.
Given the public nature of his departure last year from the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy, I would like to remind everyone that Eric has remained a tenured member of the MIT faculty. Todd’s message<https://intranet.broadinstitute.org/node/27831> explains more about Eric’s return to the Broad. As for his role in MIT Biology, I will be meeting with Eric soon to discuss his plans for engagement with our department. I look forward to him contributing ideas and energy to our work in a respectful environment of inclusive excellence.
As always, if you have any questions or would like to speak with me for any reason, please sign up for department head office hours <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Rd7Q4He6WzD9k263dCPR3iHVlZW88GdMNCq0Gv-iauA/edit?usp=sharing> or contact me at keating at mit.edu<mailto:keating at mit.edu>.
Best regards,
Amy
