Dear biology faculty, students, postdocs, and staff,
It is a great pleasure to share with you the news that the MIT Corporation has approved the appointment of Dr. Daniel Lew as a Full Professor in our department. Danny will establish his MIT lab on the sixth floor of building 68 in March of this year.
Danny is currently the James B. Duke Professor of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke University. He brings to our department deep expertise in fungal biology<https://sites.google.com/view/lewlab/home> and an interest in how cells establish polarity, allowing them to distinguish direction, for example in yeast budding and mating. Danny has a superb international reputation as a scientist, mentor, educator, and colleague. His rigorous and interdisciplinary approach to probing fundamental molecular mechanisms is an excellent fit with our department and MIT, and I am certain that many of you will enjoy and benefit from interactions with Danny and his group.
Danny is married to MIT president Prof. Sally Kornbluth<https://biology.mit.edu/profile/sally-kornbluth/>, who has also been appointed as a Full Professor in our department. I am delighted that MIT’s search for a new leader has brought two exceptional scientists to MIT Biology. We look forward to welcoming Sally and Danny in the weeks to come.
If you would like to welcome Danny or ask him questions about yeast polarity or his plans for his lab at MIT, you can reach him at: daniel.lew at duke.edu<mailto:daniel.lew at duke.edu>
Best regards,
Amy
