Subject: MIT AAI Institute Recommendations
The MIT Asian American Initiative (AAI) has created a list of five institute recommendations to make MIT a safer and more inclusive space for Asian/American students — read our statement and sign to support here: asianamerican.mit.edu/recs<http://asianamerican.mit.edu/recs>
After witnessing the rise in anti-Asian hate amidst the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in 2020, the MIT Asian American Initiative (AAI) has spent a long time grappling with what it meant for Asian American students, one of the largest marginalized groups on campus, to still feel invisible. For a little over a year, we’ve worked on creating a series of five recommendations for administration to make MIT a more inclusive and safe space for Asians and Asian Americans:
1. Hire more Asian American senior-level administrators, faculty, and staff
2. Hire culturally competent mental health professionals and medical practitioners
3. Disaggregate data of Asian American enrollment, graduation, and admissions by ethnicity
4. Offer courses in Asian American Studies and install ethnic studies programs
5. Create a permanent, physical space for Asian American students and increase cultural representation.
We’ve set up a display in Lobby 7 for the week and will also be at the student center and Lobby 10 booths to talk about our recommendations! You can sign and support our petition using this link: asianamerican.mit.edu/recs<http://asianamerican.mit.edu/recs> and like/share our post on Instagram<https://www.instagram.com/p/CbsGsHhOOPz/?utm_medium=copy_link> to amplify our message. Best,
Elaine
