Dear MIT grad and undergrad students,
We invite you to participate in a pilot mentoring program for undergraduate students in MIT’s physics courses. If interested, please contact: kmperez at mit.edu<mailto:kmperez at mit.edu> or ebert at mit.edu<mailto:ebert at mit.edu>
Mentors provide course-based support to ~2 mentees, receive weekly mentorship training, and build community within the department. Typical time commitment is 4 hours/week.
Mentors will be compensated a stipend corresponding to $15/hour for all mentee meetings, prep time, weekly community meetings, and trainings. But more importantly, mentors will work alongside professors as partners in the academic mission of MIT. Mentors last spring said:
* “I think the main thing is like, there's a lot of jobs on campus and stuff that you can do. But this definitely feels to me like one of the those [with] the largest direct impact that you can see for yourself with your own eyes and it's just very rewarding. I think it's probably one of the most rewarding jobs on campus, but that I guess that's also a very personal thing.”
*
“It can change someone’s trajectory in the class to have an individual who cares about them and believes in their success.”
*
“It was really nice to also interact with the professors as well and the teaching stuff. Within the mentorship program we had a kind of community that is generally not really there when you just have a class.”
*
"For a lot of students, being so actively in communication with professors would open up a lot of doors for them. Just knowing more professors and getting to know them as people as well. And I think that's a huge positive as well for anybody who wants to be a mentor.”
* “I would say that the biggest impact the mentorship program has on my plans is what I'm going to look for in a mentor in the future. And now that I’ve been a mentor, I know how I can better facilitate the relationship from the mentee side as well.”
Both undergraduate students and graduate students are encouraged to apply for mentor positions.
