Dear Members of the Biology Community,

These are difficult times and I want to thank everyone for their efforts and contributions to the community.

We are very far along in moving almost all of our efforts off campus. If there are materials (books, papers, computer) you need from your office or lab, it would be good to bring these home in the two days.

For those who are teaching, please attempt to do all of your online teaching from home. For some, this will be difficult with partners also working from home, and with children running around. If you are recording lectures, do not worry that they be perfect and I’m sure our students will get used to (and perhaps enjoy) occasional interruptions from children running around!

For our classes, it important to keep in mind the overarching goals and to be flexible in terms of the amount of material covered. A target of approximately two-thirds of what was originally planned should be sufficient.

Faculty and TA’s, please be thinking about how to engage our students with recitations, forums, and other types of interactions to help them remain connected. Students, please let us know of ideas you have for things that we can do to make this unusual situation and learning experience as useful and engaging as possible.

We would very much like all of our seniors to have enough units and to have satisfied all of the requirements for graduation. Our goal is for all our seniors to complete their degrees by the end of this semester.

For graduate students (and advisors), we would like for all those students who were planning to defend their thesis do so. This might mean forgoing the last experiment or two, but if you were planning to defend this term, you probably already have enough for our thesis.

Thanks again to everyone for your help in managing this crisis. Please say well!

Sincerely,
Alan
