To the Biology community,

We are looking forward to sharing a day of learning, reflection, and action with you tomorrow. We have attached the final schedule with Zoom links to each discussion to this email. Each session will have approximately 30-45 minutes of content (podcasts, reading, or videos) to consume, curated by the facilitators, and then 45 minutes of discussion. If you are a member of the Black Biology community and are interested in joining the Black community space, the meeting is occurring from 12 - 1 pm; email us<mailto:tlevitz at mit.edu> for the link. Additional actions you can take to #shutdownSTEM are:

  *
Take individual time out of your day to reflect on and research ways you can be actively antiracist in your lab, classroom, and community.
     *
Start here<https://www.shutdownstem.com/action> and click your role in the community for specific ideas of actions.
  *
Read<http://bgsa.mit.edu/recommendations> the 2015 Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA) recommendations to the institute and the associated 2020 update and reflect on what your role can be to amplify and push for these recommendations to become realities.
  *
Change your email autoreply for the day to indicate your participation and encourage others to take action.
     *
Effective autoreplies explain why you are participating and also provide links to resources, Black-owned businesses, books, petitions to sign, and/or organizations to support.
  *
Post on social media that you are participating in #shutdownSTEM and publicly affirm actions you are taking as a result.
     *
There are many shareable graphics<https://www.shutdownstem.com/shareables> already created on the website.

No pre-reading is required for the events; however, we recommend the following links if you want extra preparation on how to have some of these discussions:

  *
There is a short post here<https://www.netimpact.org/blog/talking-about-race?action> about how to prepare yourself to have difficult conversations about race.
  *
A link about inhabiting and creating brave spaces is here<https://www.gvsu.edu/cms4/asset/843249C9-B1E5-BD47-A25EDBC68363B726/from-safe-spaces-to-brave-spaces.pdf>.

Due to limited capacity and bandwidth of the organizers of the event, we ask that you do not widely share the Zoom links outside of the Biology department community, so that the focus is on how we as the MIT Biology department can foster a sense of community and accountability. We have attached a schedule without links as well for sharing outside of the department. For others you may know that are interested in participation, we encourage them to also take the above unfacilitated actions to #shutdownSTEM.

We want to emphasize that tomorrow is a learning experience for everyone. There are facilitators that have bravely volunteered to guide each discussion, but none of us are professional facilitators. Facilitators will establish community norms at the beginning of each discussion and we encourage self-moderation; however, if you are in a discussion where you are uncomfortable with your facilitator or the content or tone of your discussion, you can fill out this confidential form<https://forms.gle/qjs8uHVX95C4JnJT7> at any point and we will join and redirect the discussion as needed.

Please do not hesitate to reach out<mailto:tlevitz at mit.edu> or fill out the anonymous feedback form here<https://forms.gle/VUNqNZEW5K7ktPG3A> with questions, concerns, or follow-up.

Best,

Meghann Kasal, on behalf of the #shutdownSTEM.MITBio team
