Subject: [Cascade] Fall Teaching and Outreach Opportunity
Date: August 11, 2020 at 4:21:12 PM EDT
Cascade is a student-run educational program for underserved students in the Boston-area. We are currently looking for teachers for our upcoming virtual Fall program. This would be a great opportunity for your department to get involved in local outreach to underserved students, as a follow-up to ShutDownSTEM and similar initiatives! Could you please forward the teaching opportunity below to Biology undergraduate and graduate students? Thank you!
Best,
Avery and Felix, Cascade 2020 Directors, MIT Educational Studies Program

tl;dr: Teach underserved 9-10th graders at virtual Cascade every Saturday (10:30 AM - 3 PM EDT) from Oct. 3rd through 31st. Find out more about the program here, and apply to be a teacher at esp.mit.edu/teachcascade2020<https://esp.mit.edu/teachcascade2020> by Saturday, August 15th.
Cascade runs 10:30 AM - 3 PM EDT on Saturdays from October 3rd to 31st, with classes lasting 1 or 1.5 hours. Cascade aims to instill a love of learning in underserved ninth and tenth-grade students from Greater Boston-area schools and community centers, many of whom do not have access to other educational enrichment opportunities. This year, we’re excited to be holding a virtual version of Cascade that we hope will provide a fulfilling educational experience in an uncertain time.
Inspire students to love learning as a teacher! Do you want to inspire underserved students to love to learn and closely interact with them to build a supportive community? We’re looking for teachers to lead 1~1.5 hour classes that emphasize engaging activities, discussions, and problem-solving. Past classes have included “Crime Scene Investigation”, “Games, Numbers, and How to Win”, and “Mind-Mancing: How to Hack a Human Being.” Classes are typically taught by pairs or small teams of teachers, so we especially encourage partnering with your friends or colleagues to co-teach a class. We are also looking for classes about practical life/career skills, such as personal finance, policy class with public speaking activities, or a web design class with design critiques.
Sign up to teach<https://esp.mit.edu/teachcascade2020> by August 15th (Saturday)! We will contact selected applicants after the registration deadline to schedule a 30-minute informal interview that will take place from August 17th to 21st. Email us with any questions at cascade at mit.edu<mailto:cascade at mit.edu>.
Best,
Avery and Felix, Cascade 2020 Directors, MIT Educational Studies Program
