I teach MIT’s 6.903 – Intro to Intellectual Property Law. This will be my eighth year teaching it. (I took this same course while at MIT in Course 6 in the late 1970’s, and then went to law school.)

As far as I understand, my class is the only “introduction to patent law” class at MIT for undergraduates – a class where we learn about getting patents, read legal cases, Supreme Court opinions, and statutes, and do mock arguments, patent drafting exercises, etc.

I’m writing to you because it seems that my class is a virtual secret at MIT. Probably, it’s because it’s buried in the Course 6 catalog. (The reason it is in course 6, I’ve been told, goes back to the early 1970s). If you look the class up, you’ll see I get great reviews from the students who take the class – I’m a trial attorney who specializes in patent litigation, and the students enjoy the difference from regular engineering and science classes.

I know that career exploration is a big issue at MIT, as well as helping encourage innovation and invention, and I was wondering if you might have an opportunity to publicize the class in one of your periodic emails about how to experience all MIT has to offer.

I’d love to hear if you have some ideas on how I can better promote my class to undergraduates interested in patents or the law?

My class meets in the spring semester on Mondays, from 3-5 p.m. The first class is Feb. 11. There are plenty of openings. (Incidentally, I typically get one or two cross-registered Harvard students for this class each year, too, because – they tell me, Harvard also has no class quite like this).

Here’s a recently updated description of the course. Any thoughts?

6.903 Patents, Copyrights, and the Law of Intellectual Property

U (Spring)
2-0-4 units

The course will cover the most current legal issues and trends relating to the protection and enforcement of IP rights relating to information technology, biogenetic materials, and business methods. Readings include judicial opinions and statutory material, and class participation includes patent searching and drafting assignments, patentability opinions, and courtroom presentation.
