Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to ask for your help in encouraging interested undergraduate and graduate students to take part in a new IAP subject, DFY: Fun-Sized (2.s974/2.s790)<https://ovc.mit.edu/fy_fun/>, a 3-unit follow-up to the original Designing the First-Year Experience at MIT class offered in Spring 2018<https://ovc.mit.edu/fye_course/>.
The class will focus on exploring ideas for significant changes to the first-year experience that potentially could be piloted with a small group of students, for example in a First-Year Learning Community (FLC), as well as less dramatic changes that potentially could be tested with the entire Class of 2023 as a follow-on to the CUP experiment with the Class of 2022 this year. (Note: For those interested, you can explore some of the initial data from the CUP experiment<https://ovc.mit.edu/exploration-in-the-mit-first-year/draft-data/>.)
The IAP class, which I will co-teach with Professor Maria Yang, is open to all MIT students. We welcome students who were involved with the prior class as well as first-year students and others who were not able to participate last year. It will be held from 2-5 pm every day for the last two weeks of IAP (1/22-2/1). Class participants are expected to attend every session.
Students considering enrolling or wanting more information should fill out this short form<https://mit.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qUvGRfuc3OGtfL>. Please get in touch with Kate Weishaar ‘18<mailto:katew at mit.edu>, if you would like posters, bookmarks, and other materials.
Sincerely,
- Ian
