Spring is in the air with its lengthening days and sense of new beginnings: spring training and excitement for the new season; first year undergraduates declaring their majors; and graduate school open houses. He revolutionized the study of neuroscience by identifying the crucial role glial cells play in brain wiring and function, and in doing so seeded an entire field. He was also the first openly transgender researcher in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a champion both for women in science and the LGBTQ community.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Biology’s MITx Curriculum Development Specialist, Mary Ellen Wiltrout PhD ’09, was included on the Reimagine Education shortlist for Hybrid Learning for the project, "Teaching MIT Students to Think Like Cell Biologists: A Visual Approach," which she developed with Sera Thornton PhD '14, Frank Solomon, and Adam Martin for the 7.06 Cell Biology course. The project was one of 1,041 submissions across 17 categories, of which just 140 were shortlisted to give a talk at the conference. The Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research recently announced the launch of its new Center for Precision Cancer Medicine (CPCM). The center brings together leading Institute faculty members to focus on key research themes to accelerate the clinical translation of novel cancer discoveries, treatments, and technologies.

Newly minted PhD, Justin Chen, reflects on his experience in Hazel Sive’s lab studying developmental biology — investigating the complex beauty of how a face emerges from embryonic tissue. In his own words, "How nature makes something from almost nothing."
In early February, the department hosted its annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, featuring nine students doing biology-related UROPs around the Institute.
