Term: Fall & Spring

UROP Department, Lab or Center: Koch Institute for Cancer Research, Biology (Course 7)

MIT Faculty Supervisor Name: Michael Hemann

Project Title: Identification of a microenvironmental factor mediating gemcitabine resistance in pancreatic cancer

Project Description:

Although pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is only the 11th most common cancer, it is the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Unfortunately, most patients treated with one of the front-line chemotherapies, gemcitabine, develop resistance to this drug. We have identified a factor that is secreted by non-tumor cells which reduces gemcitabine’s potency in tumor cells. We are now working to understand why this factor is being produced and how it prevents gemcitabine toxicity.

The Hemann lab is looking for a student who is interested in cancer research and studying chemotherapy resistance to assist with this project. This opportunity is offered for the Fall and Spring terms with possibility for continuation during next summer. The student will learn a variety of techniques including mammalian cell culture, drug sensitivity and cell viability assays and various types of biochemical extractions.

If interested, please send your CV/resume and detail any experience or course work you have had with molecular biology and experimental biology.

I am looking for a UROP student for the coming school year. I have attached a description of the project to this email. If you hear from any undergrads interested in doing a UROP studying chemotherapy resistance and learning cell culture assays, please let me know!

Thank you,
Simona
