From simple interactions to complex communities: How interactions shape microbial ecosystems
Thursday, May 3rd at 3 pm in MIT 56-614
Ecosystems are amongst the most complex systems on this planet. They consist of a huge number of interacting organisms and these interactions between the organisms decide about the composition, dynamics and function of ecosystems. I present how a combination of theory and lab experiments with microbial communities allows to explore fundamental concepts of microbial ecosystems. I will show that we can understand microbial interactions as a combination of modifying and reacting to the environment. Along this line of thinking I will present how populations can cause their own extinction by detrimental modifications of the environment and how interactions between different microbes can be understood and even predicted from how they modify and react to their environment. Finally, I will transfer the concepts learned from simple microbial systems to natural ecosystems, which allows to understand the onset of complex dynamics in the soil microbiome.
