9.S51 - Consciousness and the Brain
Offered Spring 2016: TR 11-12:30p 46-1015

How does conscious experience arise from neuronal activity brain? In this course, we will address this question from a psychological, computational, and neurobiological perspective. Specific topics we will focus on include: What differentiates conscious and unconscious processing in the brain? What are the limits of the unconscious mind? Are there different types of consciousness? Do animals have consciousness? Can robots ever be conscious? Is language necessary for consciousness? We will discuss empirical results that are particularly relevant for each question and analyze those results within their broader theoretical context. While a significant portion of this course will be devoted to reviewing a variety of key neuroscience and
psychology experiments, we’re going to spend plenty of time discussing and demonstrating them in class. Anyone with an interest in consciousness, regardless of background/field of study (i.e., psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, computer science, physics, math, etc.) should be well equipped to succeed in this course.
