Department: Biology/Koch Institute
Faculty Supervisor: Tyler Jacks
Project Title: Investigating cell-cell interactions and tumor heterogeneity in lung cancer
The focus of the Jacks lab is to create and utilize genetically engineered mice to model various types of cancers. These models serve as tools for understanding the critical steps of tumor initiation and progression at a molecular and cellular level. We are currently investigating intratumoral heterogeneity in a well-characterized pre-clinical mouse model of lung cancer. Cellular heterogeneity poses a major hurdle for effective cancer therapy as cancer cells may depend on distinct survival signals and therefore evade therapy and repopulate the tumor.
This UROP project will involve the study of key molecular drivers that contribute to tumor heterogeneity. The student will examine the functional role of some of these genes by performing various loss-of-function and gain-of-function experiments, both in cancer cell lines and in animals. Furthermore, the student will utilize microscopy to analyze various aspects of tumor biology.
Prerequisites: Applicants should be highly motivated and willing to work independently. Preference will be given to students with experience performing biological assays. Furthermore, it is encouraged that students take the Biology Project Lab course and/or basic introductory biology courses (e.g. 7.02). Students applying for this position should be prepared to commit at least 12-14hours per week.
Start date: June 1st and continuing into the 2014-2015 Academic Year.
Contact: Interested applicants should email their CV/resumes to Tuomas Tammela (ttammela at mit.edu<mailto:ttammela at mit.edu>) highlighting relevant experience as well as a brief description of their status at MIT.
