Subject: New Enrollment Process for CI-H/HW Subjects
Date: August 25, 2014 at 11:28:10 AM EDT
This Friday, August 29 will be the launch of waitlists to help undergraduates find openings in CI-H/HW subjects, which have limited enrollments. We now ask your help in distributing information to students and advisors about the new process, which should be more transparent, fair and consistent. We hope that these online tools will eliminate some of the beginning-of-term stress and confusion students have experienced previously, as they will no longer have to search for appropriate CI-H subjects on foot.
Upperclass students indicated their selections for CI-H/HW subjects during pre-registration. Freshmen, transfer students, and students returning from leaves make their choices by this Thursday, August 28, at 5 pm. Based on their selections and priorities set by the Subcommittee on the Communication Requirement (SOCR), students will be scheduled into or placed on waitlists for CI-H/HW subjects.
On the afternoon of Friday, August 29, all students can view their schedules. Waitlists for CI-H/HW subjects will also be available to students and people advising them through links entitled “CI-H/HW Subjects” on WebSIS<http://student.mit.edu/>.
· If a student requested a CI-H/HW subject and it appears on his/her schedule, the student has a place in that subject. Enrollment requires only that registration be completed.
· If a student is still looking to join a CI-H/HW, the student must use the waitlists to request enrollment in these subjects.
The waitlists give real-time information about which subjects have openings and the size of waitlists. Students can add and drop themselves from the waitlists based on their current interests and projected placements on the waitlists.
Beginning on the morning of the first day of classes, Wednesday, September 3, CI-H/HW Instructors can offer available spots. Students will receive offers via email with the subject line: “Action Required: CI-H/HW Subject Offer”. Generally students will have c. 24 hours to initiate adding the subject.
Students should not email instructors to ask about placement in subject before classes begin. They are encouraged to go to the first meetings of subjects in which they have realistic chances of enrolling.
If a student has been scheduled into a CI-H/HW subject and does not plan to attend, he or she should drop it immediately and open up a space for another student. For the same reason, a student should remove him- or herself from waitlists for any unwanted subjects.
Many more details and extensive help materials are available about the waitlists and the enrollment process at the Enrollment Tools website, http://enrollmenttools.mit.edu<http://enrollmenttools.mit.edu/>. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact enrollment-tools at mit.edu<mailto:enrollment-tools at mit.edu>.
Best,
Mary
