NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (program solicitation attached)
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions.
As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the GRFP has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. The reputation of the GRFP follows recipients and often helps them become life-long leaders that contribute significantly to both scientific innovation and teaching. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu<https://nsfgrfp-2015.asee.org/fellows/profiles/steven_chu>, Google founder, Sergey Brin<https://nsfgrfp-2015.asee.org/fellows/profiles/sergey_brin> and Freakonomics co-author, Steven Levitt<https://nsfgrfp-2015.asee.org/fellows/profiles/steven_levitt>.
Fellows share in the prestige and opportunities that become available when they are selected. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $32,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees (paid to the institution), opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education they choose.
NSF Fellows are anticipated to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. These individuals are crucial to maintaining and advancing the nation's technological infrastructure and national security as well as contributing to the economic well-being of society at large.
So that the nation can build fully upon the strength and creativity of a diverse society, the Foundation welcomes applications from all qualified individuals. Women, under-represented minorities and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
The fellowship is competitive, and those planning to apply should devote a sincere effort to their application. More information on eligibly and application instructions can be found in the attached program Solicitation and on their website: http://www.nsfgrfp.org/

Fannie & John Hertz Foundation Fellowship
The Graduate Fellowship Award
The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend.
The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the participating schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Hertz Fellows therefore have no liability for any ordinary educational costs, regardless of their choice among participating schools.
Successful applicants have the choice of two Fellowship options:
Option 1 - Five Year Hertz

  *   $32,000/ 9-month personal stipend*
  *   Full tuition equivalent
  * Renewable for up to 5 years

Option 2 - Five-Year Coordinated

  * Hertz Period - Two Years
  *   $38,000/ 9-month personal stipend*
  *   Full tuition equivalent

Other Fellowship Period - Up to Three Years

  * $6,000/ year supplemental stipend* from Hertz
  * Requires Awardee to accept a 3-year Fellowship from another source

The Five-Year Hertz Fellowship award (Option 1) is renewable annually (upon a showing of satisfactory progress toward receipt of the Ph.D. degree) for a total Fellowship tenure of no more than five years.
* $5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children.
Fellows must attend one of the Foundation's currently participating schools, or must petition the Foundation to include a school in the United States that he/she desires to attend.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency (see our Moral Commitment<http://www.hertzfoundation.org/dx/fellowships/commitment.aspx> section).

College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.

We screen Fellowship applicants for qualities the Foundation believes are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment and/or reasonably reliable leading indicators of future professional success. These include:

Exceptional Intelligence and Creativity
with particular emphasis on those aspects pertinent to technical endeavors.

Excellent Technical Education
evidenced not only by transcripts and reference reports from senior technical professionals, but also by the results of a personal, technical interview.

Orientation and Commitment to the applications of the physical sciences
as is typical of most applicants.

Extraordinary Accomplishment in technical or related professional studies
which may offset slightly lower academic records, or add luster to outstanding ones.

Features of Temperament and Character conducive to high attainment as a technical professional
the assessment of which is difficult, albeit important to the Foundation.

Appropriate moral and ethical values
of considerable interest to the Foundation in the furthering of our basic goals.

Leverage
what difference the award of the Hertz Fellowship is likely to make in the kind, quality, and/or personal creativity of the student's graduate research.

We do not support students pursuing advanced professional degrees other than the Ph.D., such as enrollees in M.D., LLD or MBA programs, although we will support the Ph.D. portion of a joint M.D./Ph.D. study program. For a list of general fields of study in which Graduate Fellowships are offered by the Foundation, see Fields<http://www.hertzfoundation.org/dx/fellowships/fields.aspx>.
Hertz Fellowship Application
The annual competition for Graduate Fellowships begins with the application period which opens each year in August at which time a deadline consistent with those of NSF and other fellowship granting organizations will be posted. Only those applications which are complete, with all supporting materials and documents provided (including Reference Reports) by the posted deadline will be assured of full consideration by the Foundation. Untimely or incompletely-submitted applications will be entertained only at the Foundation's discretion and convenience.
Each year's competition concludes at the end of the following March, at which time the Foundation's Board of Directors determines the most highly qualified Fellowship applicants and the number of new Fellowships which available resources will be able to support.
All Fellowship applicants are notified by mail of the Foundation's action on their application on or before April 1 of each year.

National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program
Description
The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $25,000 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.
This highly competitive program aims to identify the most talented researchers conducting dissertation research related to education. The Dissertation Fellowship program receives many more applications than it can fund. This year, up to 600 applications are anticipated and about 30 fellowships will be awarded.

- The online application<https://www.gdg.do/prod1/portal/portal.jsp?c=4348801&p=4739686&g=4741168> is available! Please feel free to enter the portal and begin an application.

- The NAEd held an online webinar opportunity<https://nasevents.webex.com/nasevents/lsr.php?RCID=1b9a887754a463b75333c61464e94563> for our fellowship applicants in September 2013. If you would like to hear a recording of the event, please click the link in the previous sentence. Some excellent information on the fellowship application process was disseminated and if you have the opportunity, please feel free to watch it. Upon clicking on the above link, please wait a minute (or longer depending on your internet speed) for the audio and video to load. The webinar is approximately one hour long.
 Fellowship Awards
• Fellows will receive $25,000 for one academic year.
• Fellowships must begin during the 2015-2016 academic year.
• Fellows will be included in professional development retreats with members of the National Academy of Education and other senior scholars.
• Approximately thirty dissertation fellowships will be awarded in 2015.
• Selection will be made by a committee of NAEd members and other senior scholars.
Qualifications and Guidelines
The NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program is open to all eligible applicants regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
• Basic selection criteria are as follows:
Importance of the research question to education
Quality of the research approach and feasibility of the work plan
Applicant’s future potential as a researcher and interest in educational research
• Applicants need not be citizens of the United States; however, they must be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States.
• Fellowships are not intended to finance data collection or the completion of doctoral coursework, but rather to support the final analysis of the research topic and the writing of the dissertation. For this reason, all applicants must document that they will have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1, 2015 and must provide a clear and specific plan for completing the dissertation within a one or two-year time frame.
• Applicants should have a demonstrated record of research experience in education.
• Proposed project must be an education research project. NAEd/Spencer funds studies that examine the efficacy of curriculum and teaching methods, however, we do not fund the initial development of curriculum or instructional programs.
• Applications will be judged on the applicant's past research record, career trajectory in education research, and the quality of the project described in the application.
• Fellows may not accept employment other than as described in the application, nor may they accept other awards without prior approval (including awards from NAEd or Spencer) that would provide duplicate benefits.
• Applications must be made by the individual applying for the fellowship; group applications will not be accepted.

Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science is pleased to announce that the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2014 solicitation. Applications are due 5:00pm ET on Wednesday September 24, 2014.
The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.
The SCGSR program is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories. The supplemental award provides for additional, incremental costs for living and travel expenses directly associated with conducting the SCGSR research project at the DOE host laboratory during the award period.
The Office of Science expects to make approximately 100 awards in 2014, for project periods beginning anytime between January and September 2015.
Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found at: http://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/.

The SCGSR program is sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS), in collaboration with the six Office of Science research programs offices and the DOE national laboratories, and the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE).

For any questions, please contact the SCGSR Program Manager, Dr. Ping Ge, at sc.scgsr at science.doe.gov<mailto:sc.scgsr at science.doe.gov>.

Michigan Society Fellows Program in the Humanities, Arts, Sciences, and Professions

The Michigan Society of Fellows was founded in 1970 through grants from the Ford Foundation and Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies for the purpose of promoting academic and creative excellence in the humanities, the arts, the social, physical, and life sciences, and in the professions. In 2007, the Mellon Foundation awarded a grant to add four Mellon Fellows annually in the humanities, expanding the number of fellowships awarded each year from four to eight. The objective of the Society is to provide financial and intellectual support for individuals holding advanced degrees in their fields, who are selected for their outstanding achievement, professional promise, and interdisciplinary interests. We invite applications from qualified candidates for three-year fellowships at the University of Michigan.
Candidates should be near the beginning of their professional careers. Those selected for fellowships must have received the Ph.D. degree or comparable artistic or professional degree between June 1, 2012, and September 1, 2015. Fellows are appointed as Assistant Professors in appropriate departments and as Postdoctoral Scholars in the Michigan Society of Fellows. They are expected to be in residence in Ann Arbor during the academic years of the fellowship, to teach for the equivalent of one academic year, to participate in the informal intellectual life of the Society, and to devote time to their independent research or artistic projects. This is not an artist-in-residence program but rather an opportunity to develop one’s work in conversation with fellows from a range of disciplines during the three years of the fellowship. Applications from degree candidates and recipients of the Ph.D. or comparable artistic or professional degree from the University of Michigan will not be considered.
Applications will be reviewed by Society members and University faculty. Final selections will be made in late January by Senior Fellows of the Society. Eight Fellows will be selected for three-year terms to begin September 1, 2015. The annual stipend will be $55,000.
