Research Intern Description
Part Time (10 hours per week during school year; potentially full-time during summer; flexible hours)

The intern will assist Dr. Gawande's primary Research Assistant (RA) with researching and preparing background and fact checking materials for his wide-ranging and frequent writing projects. These projects are almost always multi- and/or interdisciplinary but generally center around the practice and improvement of modern medicine.

Immediate Responsibilities: The intern will primarily aid the RA in performing literature searches and retrievals, including online and in-library searches on topics broad and specific, collection of books, articles, and other sources, and photocopying/scanning of relevant material. The intern will have the opportunity to read material from an extensive number of fields and will be tasked with creating an annotated citation database (EndNote or similar) in collaboration with the RA. In addition, the intern will help manage sources (e.g. returning or renewing books as necessary), transcribe audio and video files, and perform other administrative tasks as requested.

Learning Opportunities: In the coming months, the intern will have the opportunity to learn more advanced research and analysis skills, including source analysis (for relevance and reliability), fact checking, primary source search and retrieval, and basic interviewing techniques.

Eventually: For the right candidate, the intern position may lead to further responsibilities and learning opportunities such as research planning (i.e. generating research questions and determining the scope of the project), primary source analysis, advanced interviewing techniques, synthesis of material from wide-ranging sources, systems development for research, and manuscript preparation.
