Time in Cosmology

Friday, October 18th, 2013

The Castle, Boston University

225 Bay State Rd

1pm – 5pm

Is time real? What is the status of time in cosmology? Are physical laws timeless or could they evolve? Could changing our views about the status of time and laws in cosmology help us solve the problem of quantum gravity? This second session of the Boston Colloquium for Philosophy of Science will explore some of the fundamental questions raised by Lee Smolin's recent book Time Reborn.

1pm Time and Law in Cosmology

Lee Smolin (Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics)

2pm Realism without Reification: How to Believe in Becoming

Jenann Ismael (Philosophy, University of Arizona)

3pm A Universe in which Everything Changes Sooner or Later

Roberto Mangabeira Unger (Law School, Harvard University)

4pm Cosmological Laws without Real Time

Chris Smeenk (Philosophy, University of Western Ontario)
