Spring 2013 Newsletter
Come see what's happening at Boston University's Center for Philosophy and History of Science...
Stereotype Threat: Philosophy, Psychology, and the Self<http://www.bu.edu/cphs/colloquium/colloquia/StereotypeThreat.htm>
1-6pm Friday, February 8
Terrace Lounge, George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Avenue
The goal of this colloquium is to facilitate a dialogue between psychologists working on stereotype threat and philosophers of psychology. Stereotype threat can be roughly described as the negative impact of stereotypes upon those stereotyped, and it appears to have far-reaching influence. Not only does research on this phenomenon have important consequences for our philosophical understanding of the self, but it has also been shown to be a key factor in the underrepresentation of women and other minorities in philosophy and elsewhere. Speakers include Louise Antony, Greg Walton, Ron Mallon, Steven Spencer, and Tamar Gendler.
The Science of Music: 150 Years Since Helmholtz's On the Sensations of Tone<http://www.bu.edu/cphs/colloquium/colloquia/53rd.htm#music>
1-5pm Friday, March 22
Terrace Lounge, George Sherman Union, 775 Commonwealth Avenue
This year marks the 150th anniversary of Helmholtz's groundbreaking work on the science of music, On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for the Theory of Music. This colloquium will explore both the legacy of Helmholtz's work and new directions in the science of music. Speakers include David Cahan, Lydia Patton, Eric J. Heller, and Diana Deutsch.
A Symposium on John Broome's Climate Matters: Ethics in a Warming World<http://www.bu.edu/cphs/colloquium/colloquia/53rd.htm#broome>
2-6pm Thursday, April 11
The Castle, 225 Bay State Road
For 2013's Karbank Symposium on Environmental Philosophy, John Broome will discuss his book, Climate Matters, in which he examines the moral dimensions of climate change. The event will include critical discussion of Broome's book by several commentators, including Stephen Gardiner, David Roochnik, and Caspar Hare.
This spring also marks another very special event at the Center: the 90th birthday of Robert S. Cohen, who founded the Center for Philosophy and History of Science, the Boston Colloquium, and the book series Boston Studies in Philosophy of Science. We will be taking this occasion to reflect on Bob's many contributions to the development of the History and Philosophy of Science, and to thank him for a lifetime of dedication to our field.
We will be collecting notes of thanks, reminiscences, and good wishes into an album to present to him at the Cohen forum on the science of music. If you would like to include a note, please email it to cphs at bu.edu<mailto:cphs at bu.edu> by February 18th.
All of our events are free and do not require registration. Please visit our website (http://www.bu.edu/cphs) for details and updates. We hope to see you at the Center soon!
