 Hello Erminia,

We have an opening for a summer intern position at Genentech Inc in South
San Francisco. This is a very exciting opportunity for students to be
involved at the forefront of human stem cell research. I hope that you can
circulate within your department so that interested students may apply.
Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Hirdesh

*Position Details:*

Background: Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem
cells (iPSCs) provide remarkable cellular platforms to better understand
human hematopoiesis and to develop clinically applicable hematopoietic
cell-based therapies. Over the last decade, hESCs have been utilized to
characterize molecular and cellular mechanisms underpinning the
differentiation of hematopoietic progenitors and mature, functional
hematopoietic cells.

Project:
i) Directed differentiation of human stem cells into the hematopoietic and
mesenchymal stem cell lineages
ii) Development of in vitro cultures of hematopoietic & mesenchymal stem
cells and their different progenitors for use in bone marrow toxicity assays

Project Details: The identification and use of specific cytokine
combinations which support stem cell proliferation and differentiation have
been developed which allows the ex vivo generation of mesenchymal &
hematopoietic cells for bone marrow toxicity evaluation. The major work in
this project will involve successful derivation of hematopoietic &
mesenchymal stem cells and further expansion of different lineages of
hematopoietic cells requiring the establishment of well-controlled,
reproducible and reliable culture conditions.
