Project Title: Investigation of the mechanisms involved in neuronal
regeneration
after injury

Project Description:
The ability of the nervous system to regrow neurites after injury is
limited. We
are interested in the investigation of mechanisms underlying neuronal
regeneration. To this end we are performing laser micro-surgeries in neurons
of
the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, and have so far identified specific
chemical and genetic modulators of regeneration. We seek an undergraduate to
assist with the elucidation of the molecular pathways affected by these
modulators. The UROP will be involved with nematode genetics, RNAi assays,
chemical treatments and laser microsurgery techniques.

Prerequisites: Intro Neuroscience or Biology, and an interest in molecular
biology and genetics. Although lab experience is not necessary, some
cell/molecular biology background would be helpful. However,
self-motivation,
enthusiasm and willingness to learn are the most important.
