>Colossal Failures studies how large, complex engineering systems are
>disrupted, most often by problems in design, operation, and
>management. Disruptions can also be caused by acts of God and by
>deliberate means. While we are interested in all sources of system
>disruption, our focus this spring is on deliberate means,
>specifically acts of terrorism. Our four areas of study are
>biological threats, container port security, skyscraper
>vulnerability, and cyber attacks. The term is divided into four
>segments dealing with each of these, including possible scenarios
>for terrorist attacks, ways of preventing such attacks, and means
>for ameliorating the conditions resulting from a successful attack.
>We will be producing a short documentary film about a fictional
>course which parallels our HASS class. Students will be involved in
>all aspects of the production, including scriptwriting, acting,
>shooting, and editing.
