<blockquote type="cite" cite><font face="Times New Roman">Colossal
Failures studies how large, complex engineering systems are disrupted,
most often by problems in design, operation, and management.
Disruptions can also be caused by acts of God and by deliberate
means. While we are interested in all sources of system
disruption, our focus this spring is on deliberate means, specifically
acts of terrorism. Our four areas of study are biological
threats, container port security, skyscraper vulnerability, and cyber
attacks. The term is divided into four segments dealing with each of
these, including possible scenarios for terrorist attacks, ways of
preventing such attacks, and means for ameliorating the conditions
resulting from a successful attack. We will be producing a short
documentary film about a fictional course which parallels our HASS
class. Students will be involved in all aspects of the
production, including scriptwriting, acting, shooting, and
editing.</font></blockquote>
