Dr. Schekman is a Professor of Molecular and Cell 
Biology at the University of California, 
Berkeley, and Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry 
and Biophysics at the University of California, 
San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. degree in 
biochemistry at Stanford University and did 
postdoctoral work at the University of 
California, San Diego. Among his honors are the 
Eli Lilly Award in microbiology, the Lewis S. 
Rosenstiel Award in basic biomedical science, the 
Gairdner International Award, the Amgen Award 
from the Protein Society, the Albert Lasker Award 
for Basic Medical Research, and the Louisa Gross 
Horwitz Prize of Columbia University. Dr. 
Schekman is a member of the National Academy of 
Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and 
Sciences. He is scientific director of the Jane 
Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research 
and past president of the American Society for 
Cell Biology.

Randy Schekman's research is focused on the 
process of membrane assembly, vesicular 
transport, and membrane fusion among organelles 
of the secretory pathway.
