UROP position
IAP and Spring 2007
Biology and Whitehead Institute
Faculty Supervisor: Peter Reddien
There is an opening for a UROP in the Reddien lab at the Whitehead
Institute in the Biology Department. The ability to regenerate
missing body parts is one of the great mysteries of biology. The
Reddien lab studies regeneration in planarians: an emerging molecular
genetic system in which RNA interference can be utilized and many
molecular resources are available. Regeneration is accomplished via
the action of a population of stem cells called neoblasts. This
project relates to the characterization of monoclonal antibodies that
recognize planarian proteins. Specifically, hybridomas created from
mice immunized with planarian cells or proteins exist and will be
screened for production of antibodies recognizing planarian proteins
and cells using a microarray-based, high-throughput approach.
Fluorescent antibody labelings will be utilized to screen for
labeling patterns in animals or on isolated cells. Goals include
development of markers for the planarian stem cells and markers for
other tissues and cell types for phenotypic analyses. The UROP
position would start in IAP or at the beginning of the spring
semester and continue through the semester.
Prerequisites: 7.02 or equivalent, familiarity with basic cell and
molecular biology.
