Great Job Opportunity
Research Technician - Division of Genetics
We are seeking a full-time research assistant to help develop the
first clinical DNA diagnostic testing for Cockayne syndrome and to
study genotype-phenotype correlations in this disorder.
The successful candidate will design and perform new molecular
biological assays. These will involve standard PCR reactions,
semi-quantitative multiplex PCR reactions, use of a laboratory robot
(TECAN Genesis Workstation 150), agarose gel electrophoresis,
automated capillary electrophoresis in an ABI DNA Analyzer,
preparation of samples for DNA sequencing by our Molecular Biology
Core Facility, and interpretation of the resulting DNA sequences.
Other responsibilities will include helping to maintain communication
with collaborating physicians/scientists worldwide, recording and
analyzing both DNA (genotype) data and clinical (phenotype) data
using a simple relational database program, documenting newly
developed clinical testing protocols, and instructing other lab
technicians in the performance of these protocols. Informal
presentations at our own group meetings will be required.
Co-authorship of papers is possible. This position, which will
provide a competitive salary and good benefits, requires an initial
time commitment of one year from the applicant.
Each candidate should have an interest in genetics and should be
organized and detail-oriented. He/she must be able to work
independently but must also be able to work well with others in a
laboratory setting. A bachelor's degree is required, ideally in a
related science. Prior experience with PCR is preferred. Strong
computer skills, especially some familiarity with database programs,
would be a desirable plus.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume to Ms.
Marcy Belliveau by email at: marcy.belliveau at childrens.harvard.edu.
(Or mail to: Division of Genetics, Enders 5, Children's Hospital
Boston, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02115.)
