Good Afternoon All:

I am currently sponsoring 13 elementary and middle schools in Maine, the
Children's Museum of Maine, the Challenger Learning Center of Maine, and
the MIT Museum in Cambridge, Mass. for Space Day 2004, not to mention
one elementary school in New Jersey and one middle school in Montana via
the Internet. This year Space Day 2004 will be celebrated around the
world on May 6th, however, Space Day activities can take place any day
of the year or can even be a year long event. Recommend you check out
the website www.spaceday.org for additional details on the program.

My teams and I have arranged for some great activities for students to
be involved (e.g. Signatures in Space, in as well as several guest
speakers (e.g. Dr. Paul Spudis-John's Hopkins University, Benoit
LaPlante-Canadian Space Agency, Jim McLean-JPL Solar System Ambassador,
Teon Edwards-TERC/EarthKAM to name a few).

However, as I am sponsoring so many schools, I have a real need for
additional speakers (if possible, four) who would be willing to come up
to Maine and give a presentation on any space related subject they would
like - Mars, returning to the Moon, remote sensing, astronomy, solar
system, etc.

Most of the schools are located within a 45 mile drive of Portland,
Maine. One middle school has been involved in designing a rover to land
on another planet. Another school is holding a star party in the
evening for the students and the community. We have submitted a request
to NASA for a live downlink from the ISS. The list goes on... However,
I have other schools that we have not found speakers for yet and
although we have some activities set up, we are in search of additional
speakers.

We could make arrangements with the schools that either you can do a
presentation at a school assembly and/or if you prefer visit classrooms
individually. Your choice.

If anyone is interested in supporting Space Day Maine on May 6th or even
sometime during that week, please contact me and I would be happy to
provide you additional details.

Dear Andy,

Thank you for getting NESSIE onto the Boston Area Planetary Scientists
(BAPS) website. With all of the amazing developments on Mars, there is
lots of interest in getting planetary astronomers to give presentations.

The big week for many educators is the week of May 6 which is the
official "Space Day." Within Massachusetts, we have a call for a
scientist to present to K-5 students at the Balch School in Norwood.
Their big theme is planetary colonization, so they are keen on getting
somebody who is involved with the ISS, Mars expeditions, or other
planetary research. The contact at the Balch School is Sean Richardson
<srichardson at norwood.k12.ma.us>.

More Space Day events are occurring throughout New England. The
coordinator for the Northeast region is Sharon Eggleston
<bseggs at blazenetme.net>. It would be great if the BAPS folk could get
involved as presenters at these various events.

Thanks,
Bill Waller
