WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU BELONG AT MIT?

After witnessing the rise in anti-Asian hate amidst the Covid-19 pandemic beginning in 2020, the MIT Asian American Initiative (AAI) has spent a long time grappling with this question. We wondered what it meant for Asian American students, one of the largest marginalized groups on campus, to still feel invisible. For a little over a year, we’ve worked on creating a series of five recommendations for administration to make MIT a more inclusive and safe space for Asians and Asian Americans:

  1.  Hire culturally competent health professionals
  2.  Create a permanent, physical space for Asian American students and increase cultural representation
  3.  Offer courses in Asian American studies and install ethnic studies programs
  4.  Hire more Asian American faculty, staff, and senior-level admin
  5.  Disaggregate data of Asian American enrollment, graduation, and admissions by ethnicity

We’ve set up a display in Lobby 7 for the week and will also be at the stud and Lobby 10 booths to talk about our recommendations!
