15.628 Patents, Copyrights, and the Law of Intellectual Property
Class schedule: MONDAYS from 11 to 1 in Room E25-117.
This six-unit subject was designed to interest students in all MIT majors. It will cover the legal fundamentals of patents, copyrights, trade secrets and trademarks, with particular emphasis on patents and copyrights. Specific topics include:
Patent and copyright protection for software.
Patentability of business methods, medical treatments, and genetic materials.
The patent application process.
Rights and obligations among co-inventors, employers, and others.
International aspects of intellectual property protection.

The instructors are:
Jeff Meldman, Senior Lecturer and former Director of Undergraduate Programs at MIT's Sloan School of Management. Jeff is a graduate of MIT (SB, SM, PhD, EECS) and Harvard Law School who has taught subjects in computer technology and law at MIT for over 35 years.
Steve Bauer, Visiting Lecturer in EECS. Also an MIT alum (SB, SM, EECS), Steve is a practicing lawyer with 30 years experience representing both MIT and leading high-tech companies in the protection and enforcement of their intellectual property rights. He is partner and co-chair of the patent litigation group at Proskauer Rose LLP (www.proskauer.com).
