Subject: Brown SUMS 2010: Math and the Environment!

Brown University's Symposium for Undergraduates in the Mathematical Sciences
(SUMS) is an annual conference which is designed to foster greater
undergraduate interest and scholarship in mathematics and mathematical
sciences. The conference features both keynote faculty speakers and
undergraduate presenters.

We are writing to request your help in publicizing this event and
encouraging your undergraduate students to attend. Before the winter recess,
your department should receive a poster for the conference.

Each year, the keynote talks focus on an application of mathematics to
another field of science. This year's featured topic will be Math and the
Environment. The faculty speakers will be:
Professor Andrea Bertozzi, UCLA
Professor Kerry Emanuel, MIT
Professor Ken Golden, University of Utah
Professor Brad Marston, Brown University
Professor Sergei Tabachnikov, Penn State University

Undergraduate students concentrating in fields other than mathematics are
strongly encouraged to join us as we explore how math can be used to model
the world we live in and address the environmental issues facing us today.

SUMS is also an excellent opportunity for student researchers to present
their work. This year, students will be able to present original research or
another topic of interest in pure math or any math-related field by giving a
talk or creating a poster for our poster session. We hope you will also
encourage your students to submit an abstract for consideration when they
register. We will accept presentation proposals on a rolling basis, so
students interested in presenting are encouraged to submit abstracts as soon
as possible.

SUMS will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Brown University in
Providence, RI. We will be able to provide a limited amount of compensation
for student speakers' travel expenses, and we will connect all visiting
students who need housing with host students. Registration is required. For
more information, and to register and submit abstracts, please visit our
website at http://math.brown.edu/SUMS.

Your help is much appreciated. We will send another reminder as the
conference draws nearer.

Yours sincerely,
SUMS Board of Directors
Andy Furnas (Andrew_Furnas at brown.edu)
Jenna Kaye-Kauderer (Jenna_Kaye-Kauderer at brown.edu)
Alex Kruckman (Alex_Kruckman at brown.edu)
