This newsletter is your window into the latest developments from the MAESTRO program at the Tal Research Group at MIT. MAESTRO (Mucosal And systEmic Signatures Triggered by Responses to infectious Organisms) is the largest clinical study in MIT history dedicated to one of medicine's most pressing unanswered questions: why do some people bounce back from a mild infection while others go on to endure prolonged suffering? By focusing on conditions like chronic Lyme disease and Long COVID, the study aims to uncover what sets those who recover apart from those who don't — and to turn those findings into tools that can meaningfully improve patient care. To get there, MAESTRO takes a "leave no stone unturned" approach, weaving together deep biological profiling through multi-omics technologies, objective functional assessments of neurological and autonomic systems, and comprehensive data on participants' lived experiences. Biological samples from blood, saliva, and urine are paired with eye tracking, cognitive testing, and hypermobility assessments to build a detailed picture of disease from every angle. Through this newsletter, we'll share research updates, study milestones, findings, and stories from the team as we work toward our ultimate goal: identifying who is at greatest risk and why, so we can one day intervene before chronic illness takes hold.
