Dear Tech Catholic Community:

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. We will have two Masses in the MIT Chapel, at 12:05 and 7:30 pm. Remember that these Masses take longer than usual weekday Masses, because we have two long lines (for ashes and communion). So plan accordingly.

Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation. It is however, an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence from meat. The rules can be found here (http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/catholic-information-on-lenten-fast-and-abstinence.cfm), but here is the main point:
“For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.”

Fridays in Lent are also obligatory days of abstaining from meat. Some people tend to forget this, so it might be a good idea to put reminders or other notifications in your phone or calendar set for first thing in the morning on Fridays.
