Does physics leave any room for free will?

Come discuss Friday's Thomistic Institute talk about the relationship
between physics and free will TONIGHT in the W11 Main Dining Room from
8:30-9:30pm after mass! Don't worry if you missed the talk, there will be a
recap and the point of this Tech Catholic Talk is really just to have a
discussion about Catholic philosophy.

Delicious and FREE PIZZA will be served.

See you there!

*Thomistic Institute Talk: Does physics leave any room for free will?*

Our next and final TI talk of the semester will be *Friday, November 3 *at *6
pm* in *3-270.* Facebook Event
<https://www.facebook.com/events/159864991278584/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22:%2229%22,%22ref_notif_type%22:%22plan_user_associated%22,%22action_history%22:%22null%22%7D&notif_id=1508897770458737&notif_t=plan_user_associated>

*Lecture Description:*
The advent of quantum mechanics a century ago overturned the deterministic
assumptions of classical physics and seemed to put randomness and
uncertainty at its core. Neither the determinism of the old paradigm nor
the randomness of the new one seem conducive to the ancient idea of free
will. What exactly is free will and does physics, of any stripe, leave any
more room for it?

*Speaker Bio:*
Fr. Thomas Davenport, O.P., received his B.S. in physics at Caltech in 2004
and his Ph.D. in physics from Stanford University in 2010, working in
theoretical particle physics. He subsequently entered the Order of
Preachers and was ordained to the priesthood in 2017. He has written and
spoken on the relationship of faith and science in a variety of venues,
including being a main contributor to the Thomistic Evolution project.
Currently he is studying Philosophy at the Catholic University of America.

There will be refreshments available following the talk.
